Environmental reviews - ISO14001 gap analysis
Cambio consultants have a wealth of experience in the development and auditing of environmental management systems (EMS's). All of us have been through the certification process as the EMS manager for an organisation. Several have worked as auditors for certification bodies and we have all now been involved as advisory consultants in EMS development programmes for client organisations.
A preliminary environmental review is recommended as the best way to identify an organisation's key environmental issues and priorities actions. It is commonly used to develop an implementation plan at the start of an ISO14001 certification programme. It enables companies to get some up front advice to get them going. In some cases clients then run with the plan without further assistance. In others Cambio continues to provide advice, support and training throughout the development of the environmental management system, up to and even beyond ISO14001 certification.
Typically the coverage of a preliminary environmental review is as follows :
- Identification of key environmental issues
- Legal constraints
- ISO14001 'gap analysis' and implementation requirements
- Environmental risks
- Business opportunities
- Identification of existing strengths and weaknesses in relation to environmental management
